I just caught Rihanna’s latest MTV, Disturbia…
And i got to say that the make-up and costumes crew did an AMAZING job.

It must have been awesome to style the whole video and go crazy with the make up and costumes (and there were so many different looks!)
Wish i could find better images…
but this is all i could find.

(images from here and video from here)
If only someone thought of putting the different looks into a magazine… *sigh*

I let out a mini gasp when my gmail flickered a subject that read “Style Bubble” and “Urban Outfitters” in the same line, heh.
UO gave Susie some of their new tights to try on. Then she took some pics and answered some questions.
Here’s the whole interview for your reading and viewing pleasure
_____________________

UO: Tell us a bit about you
I was born in London and have lived here most of my life. My parents are from Hong Kong, where I visit frequently. I studied History at UCL in London. I hate the sound of metal scraping against metal. I can read The Forsyte Saga by John Galsworthy over and over again. I live in London with a mountain of skirts and dresses and not much else. I crave properly fried chicken wings (Hong Kong style…) and Portuguese custard tarts quite frequently – sometimes both at the same time.
UO: When and why did you decide to create Style Bubble?
I started Style Bubble in 2006. I decided to start it up because I had been reading blogs like Style Bytes and Fashionologie for a while and really wanted to have a place to document my thoughts, opinions and most important personal experiences in fashion.
UO: What sparked your interest in fashion?
A love of expressing myself through what I wear…and some amazing black patent T-bar shoes that I wore everywhere when I was five years old.
UO: Describe what you are wearing today?
I’ve just moved house so I’ve rediscovered old favorites such as my red Cacharel tweed skirt and ditzy floral top, the Viktor & Rolf for H&M red heart print tights that I never ever wore and some blue tweed flats that I wore six years ago.
UO: What’s on your iPod right now?
Late of the Pier, Cats in Paris, Metronomy’s new album, Bloc Party’s annoyingly catchy new single, David Holmes’ new album, Chromeo, Battles.
UO: What are your favorite things to do in London when not working?
Having tea and cakes at MaisonBertaux, hunting for bits and bobs at The Shop on Cheshire Street, shopping at Bang Bang, checking out the charity shops in and around Kensington, eating at St. Johns Bread and Wine, inhaling the smell of Escentric Molecule 01 in and around Shoreditch (lots of ppl wear it there for some reason?), watching films at the Curzon and doing the Guardian crossword in Bloomsbury Square.
UO: And what’s your favorite indulgence?
Buying too many magazines.
UO: What’s your favorite trend for fall?
Messed-up elegance and the unexpected twists added to conventional garments.
UO: Which designers do you admire?
I love so many designers at any given time. I have heroes that I admire for their aesthetic and their approach, including Giles Deacon, Nicholas Ghesquiere and Azzedine Alaia. As for wearing purposes, the list is really long. Jens Laugesen and Jean Pierre Brangaza have never failed me for wearability and fit.
UO: How would you describe yourself? And do you think your personality is evident in your blog?
Inquisitive, random, particular and very specific. It comes across in a way on the blog but you can’t reveal everything through a fashion blog because that would just be a little bit daunting.
UO: What advice would you give to aspiring young fashion bloggers?
Blog about everything in a genuine way and just write about what you love.
UO: What was the best piece of advice you were given when starting out?
I actually never got any advice unfortunately…I suppose people told me to get a thicker skin from the negativity that started to happen on the blog.

I always find myself almost violently restraining myself from clicking the checkout button with at least three pairs of legwear and hosiery at UO. It just isn’t the most practical or comfortable thing to wear in Singapore!
But these two have been in my un-checked out cart for the past few hours..

Silence & Noise Coated Legging, USD38.00
Finally a *slightly* cheaper alternative to those exhorbitant American Apparel ones

Either Or Tights, USD14.00
First saw these on the fashion void that is dc – Brooke tried to DIY these! I think she was semi-successful, haha.
Mmmm, how tempting.
Just missing the Chanel logo ’round the ankles, no?

Bubbles aren’t exactly my favourite shape, but i can understand why its got its supporters.

with images like that, how can anyone resist really?!
But then again, there are TEAMS of people who put in the time and effort to make the images come out delicious.
and usually, bubbles are worn at the waist, to balance out the proportions a bit better.

and for good reason!
would you rather have a big, but perky butt? or a big and saggy ass?? hahas.
Sarah + bubble : makes her feel like her behind is…

that size :/
- Sarah, trying to overcome her fears..

Rupert
2000 – 2008
My golden retriever passed away on August 26. He usually is energetic, boisterous and chor lor (ignorantly klutzy, is that the correct translation?). But that last day, the only day, he showed signs of being sick.. it wasn’t pretty. Its upsetting that everything happened so quickly. Shan’t go into the details of it all. But I’m going to miss him.

I wish you got to know him too.
(sorry for the non-fashion-related post)

(Please ignore the spastic look on Sarah’s face)
The girls from Fashion Nation had a party cum bloggers/readers meet-up in conjunction with their 2nd Anniversary at Soon Lee on Haji Lane.

We braved the MOODILY TORRENTIAL rain to get there! (and the weather for the past few days has been evil!!! out with the wellies everyone!! now, if only i had a pair 0.0!)
And here are some of the photos!

Jo with Stephie from Fashion Nation

Jo, Kay from The Clothes Project and Sarah
Sarah wore
Top: Black Sequinned-front Tank from Zambesi
Bottoms: Brown Bubble Pants with pleating details, a gift from sister
Shoes: Gladiator sandals from Far East Plaza
I think i have a subconscious compulsive need to stick to themes. Like with Wardroblings + Wardrobe, I felt it was important to show my support for local designers, thus the resulting emsemble (which you can see here).
Similarly, all three items, have not seen the light of day prior to the party. In fact, whilst on my way to Soon Lee, I felt as though i had walked through my closet with my eyes closed and just threw on whatever i grabbed.
Sequins + Bubble + Gladiator sandals = TOO MANY statement pieces!! (but somehow, it works out.. at least i tell myself that!)
Someone asked…
Q: whats wrong with bubble pants?
Sarah: ‘I’m self-conscious of my bum, so i don’t like to wear anything that would make my bottom look bigger. But then again, it works both ways.. if anyone thinks my bottom is big, I could always blame it on the bubble! hahas’

also at the party was X-wen from Fash-Eccentric, pictured with Jo. (i thought X-wen’s dress was really pretty)

and the Swirl Girls (Evelyn, Priscilla and Suzanne)!!!
behind my facade of calmness, i was SUPER excited to meet them. i <3 their blog!! and in all my excitedness mixed with intimidation, i didnt know what to say) But i rubbed shoulders with the Swirl Girls! (((:
ok! deep breath!

Evelyn also brought along her family. Here is Jo with Oliver (his outfit had eyes, a pig nose AND squiggly tail! how cute is that?!) [Oliver was looking at his mommy and Priscilla who were trying to coax him into smiling for the photographs] (:

Zhiqiang from Trait, Jo and myself.
We didn’t get to chat much but he gives off a very cool vibe. I LOVED his outfit and admittedly jealous of his prominent cheekbones. (i was secretly staring.. i hope it wasn’t too obvious!)
What Jo wore
Top: Floral print sleeveless top with skirt and zipper from H&M
Cardigan: Purple cable knit cropped cardigan from Giodarno Concepts
Bottoms: Jeans from River Island
Necklace: Malleable necklace from Hong Kong
Shoes: Yellow tie flats from Hong Kong
She says she felt too cute for comfort with the florals and cutesy skirt. In the words of X-Wen from Fash-E, “I thought we were supposed to look spastic” – Jo thought so too! ):

Laila from Rock.The.Trend was there too.
My friend Steph (whose work you can view here), whom i helped with this project, photographed Laila’s next collection. I am eager to see how everything turned out (:
Someone else we talked to was June from Rose.

I got to try on her kooky glasses. ($2 from Daiso!!!)

Looking through the glasses made my eyes water, cos you cant really see..

We were chatting with June while Jo and I were browsing through the Soon Lee store.

These fabric badges were too adorable to resist. (Jo got the elephant and I bought the kangaroo)

Jo felt the need to have a hoity-toity expression to match the hair accessory.

All in all, we had a lot of fun with

good food…

great drinks…

and wonderful company!!
A big THANK YOU to Fashion Nation and Soon Lee for organizing and hosting the party!
more of such parties please!!!

I present you the jailbird look of the best kind, in shiny silk, good volume, deep v-neck, drapey skirt, and roomy pockets – Sass & Bide’s Story of a Girl draped dress…

And then there’s its counterfeit counterpart, sans silk and lining – but other than that not much of a difference, apart from the shocking colour,

which I unearthed in the ubiquitous This Fashion chain (of horrors and surprises).
(Sorry for the horrible photo quality!)
What’s This Fashion doing copying Sass & Bide? I would understand the Luella tiered floral skirt and Miu Miu colour blocked full mini skirt because they’re in all the other fashion giants from Topshop to Forever21 too, but Sass & Bide..?
I was part horrified and part amused at this find. It was $12 and I managed to refrain from getting it for a good two days because it only came in that terrifying teal and a nightmarish red. I pass by the shop everyday and I just had to get it because they had a 3-day return policy. I wanted to see how it would fit.. would it be just like the original?

If I had the whole theatrical Viktor & Rolf lighting and puppet prop on me I might be able to walk around with the skirt like that

HAHA!
I pulled out a tackier top from my aunt’s closet to “balance” the sorry counterfeit. I actually kinda like how it looks. I might wear it to school one day, and my classmates might freak out too
Go or no go? Mmm, I don’t think I’ll be returning it, haha!

Okay I semi-lucked out again at my church’s thrift store – I got a haul of 3 blazers
(I actually got these before the Fashion Nation party which Sarah will blog about later!)
I’m a secret-fan/lurker of Karla’s Closet. Yes Karla, her stylish self and her closet of superb blazers that take turns to grace her outfits.

Oversized in black, with slim lapels, in contrast piping, tann double breasted, in floral prints – we’ve seen it all! I covet her whole stash of tailored cover-ups!
I’ve been trying to look for the equivalent(s) without looking too businessy (It might be an act of rebellion! If you know what I’m actually studying… haha) or old.

A candy-striped slim cut blazer, an oversized double-breasted checkered blazer, and an a-little-too-oversized tweed(?) slim lapel blazer. They’re all vintage – I’m assuming, from the unrecognizable brands on the labels, hugeeeee shoulder pads and offbeat buttons.
Under/over all the blazers -
Top: Asymmetrical neck tee from Munk
Bottoms: Skinny jeans from River Island (They are my favourite favourites! Do they look weird turned up?)
Shoes: Both from Charles & Keith
Jewelry: from Diva and H&M
Scarf: Tie-dye scarf from H&M
Belts: from Aldo and Mango
Maybe I still look kinda old… maybe I’m not quite sure how to pull these off. But there’s this nice warm sense of security knowing that my blazer collection is slowly growing.
Oh yes, and again, they were $1 each

Yeap, it was Wardrobe and Wardroblings yesterday and it was the first time Sarah and I were invited to a fashion/design event as… bloggers.

We met Kay from The Clothes Project, plus Stephie and Dottie from Fashion Nation and all of them were incredibly friendly. I was so embarrassed I couldn’t recognise Kay at first admist all the crazy snapping in front of the runway. Then the FN girls came and instead of going over to say a normal, cool and composed “Hello”, I very instinctively and madly did a mini-hand-kowtow to them .
Please dig me a hole.
But the rest of the night went fine and we had some champagne to end of the show (:
It’s kinda creepy that we’re invited because we’ve only been at this for six months and we were thinking of all the times we’ve had to pronounce “wotton cool”.
When we came up with the name, we couldn’t care less that there were potentially embarassing ones in our longg list of possibilities. All this throwing names around, banter and decisions were made via email – we never really spoke to each other about it in person.
Then came the day a reader went up to Sarah and asked “Are you from Wotton Cool?” I think she stifled a giggle/laugh and then mustered up some of herself to say “Yes”, sorta consciously without “I am from – (the name that must not be pronouced) Wotton Cool!”
Maybe I exaggerated a bit – but yes, I think we’ll just laugh it off over and over again (: I do like it cos it’s so weird and funny it’s us – but pronouncing it is just wayyyy different.

Top: Lace backless halter from Hansel
Bottoms: Black wide-legged pants from Nicholas
Shoes: Nude strappy heels from Charles and Keith
Sarah felt compelled to come in an all-local designers ensemble. She has trying to avoid having her picture taken by me so she was turning around and around, hence the weird shot.

Top: Brown and black silk waistcoat from Mime
Bottoms: Pleather pants from Topshop
Accessories: Topshop
Shoes (not pictured): Broad strap sandals from Charles and Keith (same as Evelyn from Swirl Girls!)
I didn’t have a nice full body shot of myself, so we’ll all have to make do with this awkward one of me smi-frowning (smile/frowning) at Sarah when she took my photo right before the show started.
(I bet you spent this post mumbling “Wotton Cool” to yourself to listen to how funny and it sounds. Stop it! :p)

Yesterday we were treated to Wardroblings and Wardrobe – a runway show which showcases that best of the upcoming fashion designers and fashion school graduates! It’s great that they’re having such tremendous support.
Here are some designers and their pieces that made nice(r) pictures from our furious snappity clicks.

Loko Yu started the show with some oddball fun – think cute clashy random prints, clear plastic pockets, kitschy (I don’t usually like to use this word but yes – kitschy) accessories, odd fabrics and even odder shapes. Strangely enough I quite like it.
I think a tiny part of me stowed away in a smelly dusty cupboard of mysterious drawers really wants to wear loud loud neon stuff like that.

Sharifah Ashahnadia Bte Syed Azman picked three designs from her graduate collection. They seemed a little out of sync with each other, but the pieces were stunning individually. She was featured in Urban a few weeks ago in a graduate designers special.
This collection was inspired by The Godfather, or the mafia translated into feminine form. The top paired with the purple skirt actually had metal eyelets to resemble bullet sprays! Coolios.

Anastasia Hoeng had her first two models trot out in this conjoined top which thoroughly tickled my fancy. I think her designs are very much layer-ables – nice soft jerseys and diaphonous linen blend tops with a sheen. Mmm.

Max Tan stole the avant-garde portion of the show, or dare I say the whole show! His floaty ensembles with big on volume, big on shapes, and also big on details. See the balloony pants up there? There’s the collar around the waist, pleats down the front, pockets at the side, drawstrings at the hem – I don’t know what else he managed to fit in there!

Xian Lee incorporated the most unexpected of pintucks, folds, flaps, pleats and drapes into her pieces. I like subtlety like that (:

Furmuse came across as pretty preppy, high-street, and reminded me a great deal of Topman. I wasn’t quite sure if i liked where this showcase was heading, but I was slowly won over by the varied texture that is absent in a lot of male wear. And those Dr. Marten’s! I want those ):

Pouf lived up to the girly-cute airy light-headedness that you’ll think of at the mention of it. Nope there’s nothing bad about airy light-headedness in this collection. Some pieces looks appropriately ditzy, and others were drowned in rock-hick glamour. I think a lot of the looks were held together by the cool toy car brooches and pins that graced many belts and hairdos. Love those!
The Fashion Fraternity did a fantastic job organizing this event, seeing how biggg it was and all the crazy work they had to do to deliver their baby of goodness knows how many months!
Kudos to TFF and we hope to be part of the event next year again (:
