WOTTONCOOL

next-NEXT

It’s a good feeling to be kinda sheltered while you’re still young and growing. And that is what PARCO@MILLENIAWALK’s doing with The Fashion Incubator Programme.

Young and up-and-coming designers with their own labels, but without a strong distribution channel can look forward to becoming part of a 6,000 sq feet Fashion Incubator space, complete with mentorship, business development support and training programme.

This idea was imported from Parco in Japan, and ooohhh, doesn’t it sound like a dream? At least after a lot of hard work.

Mmmm. I often dream about having my own clothing line, or shop, or work with my mum at her florist’s, but I tend to forget that oh, at the end of the day, it’s business, it’s entrepreneurship. (Yes, even though I’m studying business… lol)

Here’s Priscilla, formerly from Swirl, but now with her own label, Chalk! – which very much embodies her, if I can say so. Cute as a button (and polka dots) and way sweet. Look out for her and some other designers, because

wottoncool is giving away

FIVE PAIRS OF TICKETS TO THE
next-NEXT DESIGNER OF THE YEAR 2009

which includes a fashion show of the creations by the 25 designers,
happening Friday, 6 November, 7pm.

To win these passes, all you have to do is,
1) Be a friend of us on Facebook,
2) Update your facebook status with, “@Wottoncool Sarah Jo, I wanna go to PARCO@MILLENIAWALK’s next-NEXT Designer of the Year 2009!” ASAP, LIKE, NOW?!?!

October rundown

October has been a running month.

10323_171969491467_151672691467_3834598_1961984_n

The first two weekends were spent at Bukit Gombak stadium for IVP (Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic) Track and Field Competition. My events were in 400m and 200m. Little training. No experience. Scariest 30-40seconds of my life!

Thank you Edwin for the wakeup call.

And this unearthly waking was for the Nike Human Race.

Hit or Miss Singapore Universe

A year ago, the 2008 Miss Singapore Universe contingent received flak for Merlion-inspired costume.

(Source)

You can read more about this story here and here.

Fast forward to 2009…

(I suspect) In attempts to counter the less-than-friendly responses, the organizers gave the public control over the selection of 2009’s costume.

The result was an online voting competition open to National Service (NS) men, which was recently mentioned in the papers.

Ldesign10

Ldesign3

Students from Raffles Design Institute submitted their sketches and concept writeup for voting.

Ldesign5

Ldesign4

The intentions were good.

In fact, rather brilliant, if the objective was the get a greater buy-in from the population and fuller support for the final costume chosen.

Ldesign2

Ldesign6

Some designs are quite impressive.

Ldesign9

And for the students participating, its good exposure for them.

(Who wouldn’t want to say that they’ve designed the costume worn by Miss Singapore at an International competition, viewed by millions?!)

Ldesign8

The presentation of idea, sketch and concept had a significant impact on my opinion.

Ldesign1

Take for example, winning design by Chiang XiaoJun. The sketch, I like… the colours and visual concept looks pleasant. But with spelling mistakes like ‘Singaporian’ and grammar mistakes… ‘that is what most proud about of my country’?!

Not a very proud “Singaporian” moment.

At CommunicAsia 2009, Jo and I had the opportunity to meet

lg-gd900-contest-deadline

(Source)

The LG GD900 Crystal face-to-face. (:

Her reputation certainly preceded her.  And before being introduced, I had heard…

about her style and svelte figure,

about her fun-filled and vibrant personality, and

about her enviable combination of both beauty and brains.

She certainly blew me away with her multitude of talents and skills.

I admire her 8 Megapixel camera and tempered-glass slide-down touchpad. And not forgetting her ever-so-approachable touchscreen and outstanding memory. In addition, she knows how to balance work and play, with built-in games as well as MS Office & PDF document viewing capabilities. I like!

What struck me most during our little heart-to-heart, was the ‘crystal’ pad. Because not only does it function as a keypad, it also doubles as a mouse pad to allow for easy navigation to icons without leaving the usual unsightly fingerprints on the screen.

Molesting the crystal clear touchpad is SO much more fun! Seriously!

Gesture shortcuts, a key feature – allowing me to trace a symbol on the touchpad and immediately direct me to the linked widget, was such a fresh idea that it took me some time to warm up to it. Now, my interest is piqued and I’m dying to use it!

Alas, my current mobile doesn’t have such capabilities… ):

Having met, I’d really like the GD900 Crystal to be a more significant part of my life, instead of just hi-bye friends.

I’m so sure we could be BFFs! (We are like totally on the same wavelength, yo!)

And YOU could help Wottoncool win an LG GD900 Crystal!

All you have to do is vote for our photo

Sarah and Jo

You can cast your vote on the Facebook Group: Get Creative with the LG GD900 Crystal!

Your vote may come in the form of

a) ‘Likes’-ing our photo
b) Casting your vote under ‘Comments’
c) Casting your vote on the Group’s Wall

Any votes in our favour would be greatly appreciated :D

And…

If we win, Jo and I will have to flip for it

Because they will only give one phone to the person(s) in the winning photo :/

(Damn Economic Crisis!!!)

I thought I’d interject my Israel series with a Bintan entry!

Day 03 Jo and I

Day 01 Ferry

Early Friday morning, we gathered at Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal with bikes and baggage in tow.

After an hour-long ferry ride and short shuttle by bus,

Day 01 Lunch

We arrived at Nirwana Resort Hotel in Nirwana Gardens,

Day 02 Bintan Tri

Quickly settled, registered for the race and went to check out the event area.

After which,

Day 01 Emo

We hit the beach!

Day 01 Random

Can you spot the odd one out?

(By the way, the water was SUPER clear and calm)

Later in the afternoon, I went with the other cyclists to check out the route. We cycled approximately 2/3 of the route and I was dying 0_0! Plus it did not help that they all had road bikes while I was trying desperately to keep up with my mountain bike.

Anyway, mid-way through that route, my behind was already starting to ache. (And it continued to ache throughout the day)

Day 02 Entering

And it was the same thing for the actual race on Saturday. (Sorry I don’t have photos from along the route. Was rather busy)

Day 02 Bike

That’s me, in blue, just as I complete my 20km bike in 1:17:something-seconds (which was more than the time it took for a friend to complete TWICE my distance :/.)

READ: I.AM.UNFIT!!!

But I do admire all these, and I say this affectionately, old-foggies – 2 or 3 times my age – who completely kick my ass in terms of timing & fitness levels.

Day 02 Complete

Well, the main point is that I SURVIVED!

And got a ‘Finisher’ medal!

(can you sense me beaming :D !!!)

Having experienced a triathlon, even as a relay participant, I can understand why? and how? people can get addicted to subjecting themselves to 1.5km swims, 40km bikes and 10km runs. (within a time span of several hours. NOT cumulative over several days/weeks/years. HOURS.)

My theory is that because they exercise so much, they’re all high on endorphins, thus everyone is really, really happy :D . The atmosphere is friendly and everyone is very supportive of one another. They’d stand at the sides of the route and cheer participants, encouraging them to keep going.

Also, its the sweetest thing to see parents running the finishing stretch with their children who are waiting for their parents to finish and join them as they run that home stretch. (:

All in all, it was definitely a memorable experience. And I do encourage, if you’ve been considering, to try out for at least one event in your lifetime.

P.S. Sorry for non-fashion-related posts. :/

Who Won What

PRIZES!!!

Rachel will be getting the black package, Ginger, the brown package, and Jenny, the Ferragamo shoes!

Here is Rachel’s ultra random entry

Sarah and Jo go to New York to celebrate Wottoncool turning one!
Barely minutes after stepping off the plane, they get accosted by The Sartorialist,
“Love those Sperry top-siders and the superb gladiators girls…”

Who directs them to a fashionable gay bar in SoHo;
(Also because Jo’s sister said to go.)
After plenty of daiquiris, they bump into Tim Gunn
Who tells them “Stop by the Atlas tomorrow, I would LOVE to have you on the show!”
Mel C chimes in from the next table,
“Yeahhh I totally get your name luv, like wot’ton but koool… it’s so wot’ton it’s cool!”
“I think you mean ‘rotten’ darling,” says the posh blonde hanging off her arm before falling over from too many cosmos

But they get booted from the first episode of Project Runway,
Because they got distracted by the thrift store next door and have nothing suitable for clothes-making from the supermarket.
“What happened girls?  I thought I told you to make it work…” sighs Tim Gunn
“We’re sorry!” chorus S & J, looking genuinely contrite, despite having scored many cheap vintage designer bargains that day
“But we can make you fluffy heart-shaped pancakes and Asian-inspired pesto spaghetti!”

“Mmmm that sounds divine!” says Tim Gunn, beaming again, “You girls are so adorable I MUST show you to Marc who just lives round the corner from me!” before they all traipse off arm-in-arm for some delicious pan-Asian fusion cuisine.

So the gay bar really was a good idea!  Although the sea cucumbers with mustard sauce weren’t so great.

THE END.

Sarah and I are BIG suckers for rhymes. Back in secondary school we used to write the stupidest rhymes to our classmates. The start of each line did not matter, and it didn’t even have to make sense. But the end HAD to rhyme.

This is one from our friend, Cheryl, who very aptly writes in the spirit of random rhymes

Sarah and Jo were out one day.
Thinking it was a Saturday,
They went to the farm to get some hay.
but oh dear me, little did they
know that it was closed today.

They looked for the farmer but couldnt see
anything else but a bumble bee
They shouted so loudly,”OH HELP ME!”
but all they got was a scrape on the knee
and having to pay the doctor’s fee.

Still clueless about the time and day
They walked around in utter dismay
Cursing things that were made of clay
Until they looked at the clock and say,
“We have to go to the cafe to meet May!”

So there went Jo and Sarah Swee
still oblivious to the many clues they see
The weekday crowd were at coffee
Doing nothing but smiling with glee
Cos they were spending time with the family.

So they waited and waited all day for may
Who didn’t show cos it was not Sunday
Sarah and Jo frowned at their friend’s delay
Thinking that it was such a weird day,
Cos nothing just seemed to be going their way.

They sat and recited the a to z
then decided that they were having a party
to celebrate wottoncool’s anniversary
They had ice cream, cake, and cotton candy
on a saturday they could never forget, they agreed.

And here we have Ginger’s story

One day, Jo woke up and decided it was “THE” day to put on her rainbow jumpsuit. After wearing that with her disco-ball earrings, she left her treehouse and scooted over to Sarah’s yacht to pick her bestie up to go to Ibiza. Sarah, not one to fail was all decked out in in maxi tie-dye dress and a sun hat the brim so wide she had to lift her head up to look at people gawking at her.

They rode on a lightning bolt all the way to the party central and found SpongeBob and Kim Possible jiving impossibly next to LKY and LHL. Jo petitioned successfully for the abolition of National Service while Sarah asked politely if it was okay to do away with examinations forever! It was the most magnificent scene.

Beer was sprouting out of Mighty Merlion’s mouth and there was a singapore flyer sand sculpture right in the middle of it all. It was like Singapore from an adult Dr. Seuss book! They decided to retreat into a quiet corner only to meet Mary Kate and Ashley dressed up a la their “Full House” days as a parody.

“Cool dress and jumper” Ashley breathed out with a gust of cigar smoke that smelt like roses and lilacs. Mary Kate passed out and Sarah and Jo decided to climb the giant bean stalk to play the harp and allow paparazzi.

They huffed and puffed all the way up only to find themselves in a bar which served only lychee martinis. “Why, it was a pleasant alright” and stopped to drink enough lychee martinis to last a lifetime of giggles and sunshine.

Thank you all for your super entertaining stories. We really LOLed and almost ROTFLMAOed.
