Do your taste in fashion and music preferences correlate?

I’m not sure if mine do… I love Mr Big, Extreme, Nuno Bettencourt, Steve Vai. These are the people I’ve actually spent money to go to their concerts (okay not Extreme, but let’s just imagine..).

But I cannot do 80’s rock chick.

Nope.

I went for the mind-blowing Mr Big Reunion Tour 2009 at Fort Canning last night, but pretended that it was an indie/hippie music fests (although I would never go for them). I’m a ball of paradoxes, I know.

I wore a solar panel necklace… okay kidding it’s a silver bead and felt bib necklace, raglan jersey tee with a shirt tail, tweed shorts from Zara, Wallabees cut low from Clarks, vintage leather sling bag, and stuff on my wrists. So rojak right?

The entry band looks so cool with the rest of my wrist stuff :D

Was anyone there?

I need more Mr Big!

I’m bursting with leftover excitation (doesn’t it sound more eventful than… excitement?) from Mr Big and something else coming up!!!

I got a feeling…

Its been growing and bubbling inside of me for awhile now.

Of late, my high level of exposure to Apple products (thanks to my friends) – Macbook Pros, Ipods, Iphone and the like have caused me to develop a new-found appreciation for Apple products.

I totally need to become an ‘Early Adopter’ its so much cooler. hahas. I admit, I’ve been a supporter of Creative Technologies products for the past 5 years

(Source)

I still remember my first mp3, the Creative MuVo Square. But after 3 years, I traded it in for a Creative Zen MX

But after 2 years of loving use and after the warranty expired :/ it has been hit with the mysterious disease called ‘The White Screen of DEATH!’ ))): and according to the Creative Team, it’d cost $40 to diagnose the problem and an upwards of $80 to get the screen fixed.

*sigh*

I figure I might as well get a new mp3 but I’m still undecided on what to get.Creative ZEN X-Fi2

I quite like the Zen X-Fi2 size. Although it has functions like the Mic and RSS feed that I doubt I’d use. And even though, from what I gather, the sound quality is much better than Apples…

Ipods are just sexier. hahas. (:

And after reading the nano specs, I’m quite smitten.

But I’m still not sure! I need your thoughts/opinions/suggestions!!!

Hit or Miss Singapore Universe

A year ago, the 2008 Miss Singapore Universe contingent received flak for Merlion-inspired costume.

(Source)

You can read more about this story here and here.

Fast forward to 2009…

(I suspect) In attempts to counter the less-than-friendly responses, the organizers gave the public control over the selection of 2009’s costume.

The result was an online voting competition open to National Service (NS) men, which was recently mentioned in the papers.

Ldesign10

Ldesign3

Students from Raffles Design Institute submitted their sketches and concept writeup for voting.

Ldesign5

Ldesign4

The intentions were good.

In fact, rather brilliant, if the objective was the get a greater buy-in from the population and fuller support for the final costume chosen.

Ldesign2

Ldesign6

Some designs are quite impressive.

Ldesign9

And for the students participating, its good exposure for them.

(Who wouldn’t want to say that they’ve designed the costume worn by Miss Singapore at an International competition, viewed by millions?!)

Ldesign8

The presentation of idea, sketch and concept had a significant impact on my opinion.

Ldesign1

Take for example, winning design by Chiang XiaoJun. The sketch, I like… the colours and visual concept looks pleasant. But with spelling mistakes like ‘Singaporian’ and grammar mistakes… ‘that is what most proud about of my country’?!

Not a very proud “Singaporian” moment.

shoes

The eyes may be the window to the soul for most of us, but for photographer Geritt Starczewski, he takes the bottom-up approach and turns to shoes to tell tales.

“The most important in a look are for me the shoes. Shoes betray something about the personality, about the character. “

alison-mosshart-the-kills

the-hivespelle-almqivst

He takes photos of mostly pop musicians during live performances, but always no higher than the knee.

They’re in mid-step, they’re worn, sometimes tattered, they stand out, they overtake the picture.

picture-5

Sometimes you can sense that the musician is dancing, slightly nervous, with feet turned inwards, or trying to pump the crowd, with a foot on the monitor.

picture-4

She’s wearing happy tights and ballet flats – could you tell the genre? He’s wearing shiny red leather shoes – quite the showman eh?

“Many musicians are styled perfectly and everything is produced when they come on the stage. However, I have discovered a weakness in them; their shoes. With the help of the shoe you can draw conclusions about the music and the personality without knowing who is in these shoes.”

picture-2

What does this say?

Do you recognize your musicians from their feet? Or can you tell what music they make?

Granted, I don’t know some of them but it was fun to imagine!

The Ting Tings!

The boyfriend and I caught The Ting Tings! Live at Fort Canning Park yesterday. :D It was rockin’ and splendid (hahas. trying to use, what I associate as, British words)

We went at 7pm. As stated on the ticket.

We ‘met‘ the band.

picture-004

Waited in excited anticipation for the band to come out.

picture-005

Yes. The WHOLE two and a half hours (0.0!) were patiently waited out as the first and second bands sound-checked and opened for the Ting Tings. (we were about 3 ‘rows’ from the front, we couldn’t give up such good spots)

picture-008

picture-047

They performed about 12 songs over an hour or so and kept the energy very high.

Having worn my Zambesi sequin tank the previous day, I was really diggin’ Katie’s sequin shorts! (my boyfriend thought they were more like sequined undies/boy shorts.. but he liked her booties)

picture-068

picture-071

And I am really thankful that they took little breaks in between some songs, standing still and catching their breath. They would freeze in a pose for about 30seconds or so.. which made all the difference with my moody camera (that was reluctantly capturing images of the concert)

picture-093

picture-096

Jules and Katie showed their proficiencies in several different instruments throughout their set. Changing from drums, to guitar, to electone, back to drums, then guitar and back to drums. Not forgetting, they sang as well. (*kowtows)

picture-105

picture-115

In my books, they also earn extra points for ACTUALLY sounding like they do on their CD (don’t you hate it when the Live sound and CD sound do not match?! I’m fussy that way)

picture-1171

I really enjoyed myself at the concert despite some inconsiderate behavior by some groups near us.

But now, my feet hurt from the 3++ hours of standing AND being in heels for 10+ hours the day prior.. ):

Any remedies to reccomend?

A Singapore Special

BAYLENE

If you’re curious as to what our tiny island produces in the field of fashion and design, Baylene would give you a pretty good idea of the burgeoning local scene.

If you’re excited at the idea of having a piece of Singapore in your closet (especially after the world has seen the first night race ever – poor Kimi!), you’d be happy to know that Baylene now has an online store that sells their wares to the world!

(Psst, remember the chameleon-like Kelly? I didn’t know she was called Kelly then.)

It’s a nice simple layout, easy to navigate – makes you want to buy more!

There are individual garment measurements, additional pictures to show more views and other ways in which you can wear the item.

Pictures from Baylene.com

You’ll find that all the pieces encourage lots of layering and experimenting – sheer panels, lack of sleeves, extra buttons, holes or loops, deconstructed shapes, one size fits all kinds designs you can think up.

I don’t know about you, but my closet begs for more Baylene!

For now, they’re having a 50-70% off at the shop in Stamford House #01-04 from today till 2 October. Baylene will also be at Fash Bash!

*****
SINGAPORE F1 GRAND PRIX

Back to the F1 fever that struck Singapore over the past week – I beamed a bit seeing that our tiny place looked so pretty under the building lights and track lights and ooohhh, just the whole atmosphere.

Pictures from Channelnewsasia.com

I was so impressed with everything! The crowd, the driving, the drama, the circuit. *continues to beams madly*

*****
KVLT MAGAZINE

Then there’s KVLT magazine’s second issue – Loveless. Go and immerse yourself in some candid spreads and features on art, music and fashion.

This issue they interview the designers of MadCornerShop and Vice & Vanity!

Like they say – All stories have been told; KVLT just tells it better.

*****
VICE AND VANITY

Coincidentally, Vice & Vanity is available at Baylene, and also online. When they were still “new” I was kinda skeptical about their presence. Firstly, I don’t buy many accessories – what more acrylic pieces at prices I am not yet willing to pay! Then I realised, everyone isn’t me.

I guess they kinda grew on me. I really like the collars in their most recent collection.

*****

Was that too much of Singapore in a day?

Seven Songs Tag

We were tagged by Diana to list the seven songs that we’re into right now, so here goes!

Rules: List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they’re not any good, but they must be songs you’re really enjoying now, shaping your summer. Post these instructions in your blog along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they’re listening to.

Turn On Billie
by The Pierces

Hitten
by Those Dancing Days

Headlock
by Imogen Heap

Crave
by Nuno Bettencourt

[FANGIRL MODE]

And the last three which I love the most right now, but couldn’t find videos to!
Nice To Meet You by Dramagods
Sky by Dramagods
Interface by Dramagods

Check them out at HERE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.

Nuno Bettencourt formed Dramagods. Nuno can sing (bloody well), write songs, play awesome keyboards, even better guitar, and AREYOUOUTOFYOURMIND drums! His guitar emotes as much as his voice and lyrics does – which is A LOT!

Plus, he’s super hot. PLEASE MARRY ME!

(Do you see that this entry is under “Desirables” as well? Nuno is very desirable.)

[/FANGIRL MODE]

Sorry, that was a lot of caps.

Okay I don’t think we’ll tag anyone, cos everyone seems to have done it, and we took some time to get down to doing this, and I don’t think it’s extraordinarily interesting… Unless… you like what we’re listening to?
