Parco’s first installment of next-Next fashion designers have reached their one-year’s lease in the departmental store. Now, a new creative collective joins them for the second year, and leading the pack for 2011 is AKA Wayward by Mun Foong – the 31-year-old designer won the show last Friday at Millenia Walk.
She likes taking things apart, and sheepishly piecing them back together, and that pretty much explains the colour-and-print-blocked suits and shirts she rolled out on the runway.

The rip-and-repair process may sound like a tad bit like looking into the mind of a three-year-old, but the effect, surprisingly, works out swell. But! it sorta reminds me of Miu Miu Spring/Summer 2010 (cats, doves, naked ladies…), albeit with farm feathered friends.
I could see myself wearing these menswear pieces, and mixing the prints up in a single garment makes us feel bolder to do likewise with our other clothes. Sooo, thumbs up on both counts!
Do you feel slightly emboldened too?
You can start shopping for these and other upcoming local fashion designer wares at Level 2 of Parco Marina Bay in Millenia Walk, Singapore.

Summary was a nice, simple, cosy affair.. Something that’s not very characteristic of art/fashion/design exhibitions, but I like

I was enamoured with this gold sequined puffy vest. On display were works by a mix of local and Asian talents, of which some are students! My fave is the illustration wall. Now I feel like I need something like that at home..

I dunno what’s that face, haha. I would rawr, but alligators don’t.. so (makes alligator noise).

Lace blazer from Warehouse. Alligator tee from Christopher Kane for Topshop. (which I got from ebay and suspect is FAKE!!!! ): ) Shiny leggings from Topshop. Studded heel leather flats from Robinsons.

I’m not sure about you, but when my age just tipped two digits (ie, 10), my classmates and I were obsessed with mouthing the word “colourful”, because it looked like you were saying “I love you”, and that was oh-so-taboo.
Over the weekend, colourful and I love you have become essentially one and the same to me. It seemed like colours that day were so tremendously yummy and vivid in what I ate and where I went. It was like the surroundings made up for my lack of colourful clothes, haha.
My boyfriend and I took a break from the usual shopping and eating around the places that we had to run errands at. Instead, we made an effort to trek to places we’ve been wanting to go. We felt so much like tourists
First we went to First Thai Food at 23 Purvis Street. It is run by real Thais, (don’t I make them sound like some rare commodity? Fact is, there are very few native Thais who run Thai restaurants in Singapore) and they make AWESOME and AUTHENTIC Thai food.

We ordered a green chicken curry and seafood tom yam soup. The tom yam soup was certainly altered to suit Singaporeans’ (and the many tourists in the area) tastebuds better. It wasn’t half as spicy as all the ones I tried in Bangkok. But it was good, sour, appetizing, with ultra fresh ingredients. Prawns! I lurve.
It is a shop house at the corner of the block and it is decorated with lots of artificial flowers, paintings and photographs of random people, famous people, Thais and their King. The walls are tiled with pale blue and pink squares. There must be a good hundred eye catching things in the shop, but somehow they didn’t come across as offbeat or anything.
The walls outside are a bright orange and yellow, and I couldn’t resist taking a picture! So here’s what I wore anyway. Stripes |||||||||||||||||||||||||||.

Yeap those neon flowers are part of the decor in the shop as well.
We ventured into Actually… a nice white-washed shop with very exciting wares to liven up its arty pallid interiors. I want a Freitag bag!

Next we went to the National Musuem of Singapore to view Christian Lacroix the Costumier.
Musuems always remind me of art student days. Sarah and I were just plain secondary school students taking art… but I always liked saying art student hahahah.

Looking at all these drawings made me feel like I should not exist, as with many other exhibitions have.
Now for the real thing. Since pictures paint a thousand words, allow me to inject a 6000 word essay about the exhibition.

You have to go for the one of the guided tours with the curator. She speaks beautifully and she gives the costumes life!
All the costumes were made for the stage – operas, plays and all kinds of lavish productions. It is amazing to hear how dedicated and meticulous Lacroix was about these costumes, from fringes to polka dotted lining, how the depth of colour deepens as the story progresses, how he fused modern day influences with that of Baroque…

Long draped dresses that resembled Greek columns splashed with neon paint.

I felt so wholesomely decadent walking around, listening, reading and observing. Ah.
“Couture dresses should be perfect at close range. Ready-to-wear should be concrete and practical. Fashion should be a matter of look, everyday life and current atmosphere.
On stage, there are only symbols, effects and illusions. Costumes must speak outright when actors, dancers or singers enter the stage.” – Christian Lacroix
We went for a neighbouring exhibition, Come-in: Interior Design as a Contemporary Art Medium in Germany. Pretty mind-boggling stuff!

Interior design to me is something that ought to be pretty idosyncratic and individualistic. It should recognize, or at least anticipate the presence of discrete, individual people.
For the interiors and furnishings of homes or maybe offices, there are many elements of discrete items – like chairs (as opposed to benches – collective), cutlery of different shapes, sizes and designs (YOUR favourite cup to drink from, for example), cubicles or rooms (not a vast space – though this can be easily challenged)..
But what happens when you take these seemingly discrete items, then join and disjoin them at the oddest of places? Kinda unwelcoming eh.
Random thoughts.
But what’s interior design to you?
Anyway. Interesting textures ahead!

We ended the day with home-made dinner! Spaghetti with pesto sauce and a homemade ginger-spring onion with olive oil sauce that is typically eaten with bak zham gai (literally translated as white chopped chicken? Actually, just boiled chicken).

It was t3h sm3x.
Happy weekend!

On my recent trips to Hong Kong, we’ve been scrambling for the cheaper hotels so that we can make the most of our stay (ie do more shopping and eating, spend less on sleeping. Makes sense, right?)
So.. because hotels are merely a place to rest my head and bathe, and not do anything else (even the whole grand sounding continental breakfast), I haven’t really been able to find it in me to splurge on a boutique hotel – you know, the whole schnazzy mazzy lush or quirky environment where like-minded people live and be hoity-toity for a day or two.
A friend who’s been going to Bangkok has been staying in the same hotel over and over.

Room #203: Wish you were here by Buncha Chooduang
Inspired by the old happiness, friends and lovely things that took place in the golden past

Room #207: Sleep well by Oii

Room #210: Tropicool by Pirawayt Kraesaesom

Room #211: Grey Day by Nuanpan Gadvised
You’ll find all these lovely spaces from Reflections Hotel. There’s so much thought put into all the furnishings it makes me want to stay in a different room every day. I might spend a bit more of the morning lazing around too instead of just whipping out my clothes and bags and heading straight for the door.
The best thing is, prices starts at 2250baht a night, which is under SGD100 or USD 65!
Are you booking your flight to Bangkok yet?

BAYLENE
If you’re curious as to what our tiny island produces in the field of fashion and design, Baylene would give you a pretty good idea of the burgeoning local scene.
If you’re excited at the idea of having a piece of Singapore in your closet (especially after the world has seen the first night race ever – poor Kimi!), you’d be happy to know that Baylene now has an online store that sells their wares to the world!

(Psst, remember the chameleon-like Kelly? I didn’t know she was called Kelly then.)
It’s a nice simple layout, easy to navigate – makes you want to buy more!
There are individual garment measurements, additional pictures to show more views and other ways in which you can wear the item.

Pictures from Baylene.com
You’ll find that all the pieces encourage lots of layering and experimenting – sheer panels, lack of sleeves, extra buttons, holes or loops, deconstructed shapes, one size fits all kinds designs you can think up.
I don’t know about you, but my closet begs for more Baylene!
For now, they’re having a 50-70% off at the shop in Stamford House #01-04 from today till 2 October. Baylene will also be at Fash Bash!

SINGAPORE F1 GRAND PRIX
Back to the F1 fever that struck Singapore over the past week – I beamed a bit seeing that our tiny place looked so pretty under the building lights and track lights and ooohhh, just the whole atmosphere.

Pictures from Channelnewsasia.com
I was so impressed with everything! The crowd, the driving, the drama, the circuit. *continues to beams madly*

KVLT MAGAZINE

Then there’s KVLT magazine‘s second issue – Loveless. Go and immerse yourself in some candid spreads and features on art, music and fashion.

This issue they interview the designers of MadCornerShop and Vice & Vanity!
Like they say – All stories have been told; KVLT just tells it better.

VICE AND VANITY
Coincidentally, Vice & Vanity is available at Baylene, and also online. When they were still “new” I was kinda skeptical about their presence. Firstly, I don’t buy many accessories – what more acrylic pieces at prices I am not yet willing to pay! Then I realised, everyone isn’t me.

I guess they kinda grew on me. I really like the collars in their most recent collection.

Was that too much of Singapore in a day?

Will you get me this? Please?
From marcjacobs.com, it costs only $1.50! (I don’t know what currency it is in, but either way it’s not expensive!)

These are A FEW? of my favourite things?
I was looking up some photographs when I found Jeong Mee Yoon’s “The Pink Project”. Yoon was inspired by her 5-year-old daughter’s love for pink and decided to photograph all of her daughter’s favourite pink objects – be it toys, books or stationery. She went on to photograph other parents’ daughters and sons together with their favourite items.

Photos from artnet.com
W. O. W. these kids sureee are lucky. They boys even have a hint of smug on their faces! I like spending money and shopping for myself, but I love buying/making gifts too. But having a kid is like, buying stuff for one whole other person! How will I bear to spend thattt much! I can’t imagine.
But why the pink for girls and blue for boys? What about all the colours in between! You know how infants have their photographs taken right after they’ve popped out, the girls are always in pink and the boys are always in blue, and all the gifts from friends and relatives are all colour coded.
When I have my own kids, I want colours like magenta, plum, lime green, canary yellow and all the other yummy colours.
Actually, I need all these colours in my cupboard now.
I put all my clothes into to cupboard, one consists of all the clothes with black and dark colours, the other with white and light colours.
You will see that I am in dire need of a wardrobe detox when I put up pictures, haha.
I think if I laid out all my favourites they’d form a very depressing grayscale. When I have an option of colour/print v black/white, I usually opt for the latter thinking it’ll be easier to match. Hell yea, now I have a lot of things in the same colour to match.
But it’s okay, I will stock up on PRINTS and BRIGHT HAPPY COLOURS on my trip to Hong Kong, in EXACTLY A WEEK!!!!!!!!!!!
WOOOOOOOOOO.

Some designs and prints on tights and leggings come off as extremeeely tacky, but this one is really cool!
It makes me want to be a canvas too!!!!!!!!!!

Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Djurdjica Kesic seems to pluck ideas from just about anywhere and translate them into jewellry and other objects (objects! like something from a part of an installation, maybe?) that inch their way into my giant book of desirables.
Armed with a diploma in metalsmithing and degree in interior design, Djurdjica churns out fluid, organic, raw, but conceptually profound jewellry.
Take a look at these!

Vessel
Vessel ring that conceptually contains, carries, transports what is personal to one. The dimensions and form for this ring stems from the body, emerging from the contours of the hand.

Pebbles
This ring series reflects interest in exploring the notion of preciousness within the seemingly non-valuable. The rarity of the material is not any longer the defining aspect that renders the object precious.

Transitions
In the ‘Transitions’ series the starting point is an old, reclaimed chair. Through observing its function, form and materiality and through a series of interventions, a number of jewellery pieces have emerged.
Transience occurs on a number of levels: from one form to another, from one function to another, from one context to another.
Additionally, yet another transition took place: the chair that once housed the body ended up being housed (worn) by the body itself.
Text and Images from djurdjicakesic.com
What is not to like? Change, transience, transition, transformation piques my interest. I love the transitions series.
I hated doing preparatory work when I was doing art at ‘O’ and ‘A’ levels – why can’t I just start on whatever I like and want, whenever?
But now I see that sometimes it’s the thought that goes into the pieces that makes it so – awesomely – cool
(Ashamed) Actually, I’m not sure if Djurdjica is a he/she ): Care to verify?
